Woolly Worm Festival

October 23, 2019 - October 25, 2019

Celebrating its 33rd year of operation, the Woolly Worm Festival is a strange name with a practical past. The festival is named after a type of caterpillar that, depending on the color of its segments, is able to predict the severity of each week in the upcoming winter. Light segments indicate a mild week while dark segments indicate a harsh week.

Traditional activities include the beauty pageant and parade. Additionally, the annual car show allows enthusiasts from across the country to take in an array of polished steel and chrome beauties of yesteryear.

In terms of whimsy, mild or harsh weeks aside, the festival itself includes a woolly worm race, which is exactly what it sounds like–a race of woolly worms that must reach the finish line. Note: woolly worms are released back to nature upon the race’s completion. Whether they brag about their performance is anyone’s guess.

Finally, exercise is not reserved simply for the worms as visitors are encouraged to take part in the 5K marathon. During the marathon, participants are allowed to walk, run, or crawl.
