Things to Consider When Matching Food to Your Event

What is the purpose of the event?

If your event is a simple gathering of friends or colleagues, then picking a straight-forward, no-frills meal from the catering menu is perfectly fine.

However, if the occasion is a big company anniversary, recognition, or, you know, a wedding, then the food and should match the celebratory atmosphere.

It makes sense in those celebratory meals to go the extra mile and try to have food that is exceptionally meaningful.

If it’s a wedding, what is the favorite food of the bride or groom?

If it’s a company celebration, what was the favorite food the founders of the company ate while they were working to launch the business?

What is the venue of the event?

Think about where and how the food will be consumed by your guests.

Will everyone be outside in the great outdoors of the Red River Gorge, milling about and casually interacting with each other?

Or will your event be a formal affair, with the guests seated for a more traditional dining experience?

If the former, then you’ll likely want to focus more on finger foods.

If the latter, then, of course, you’ll be looking at more “knife-and-fork” sort of food options, like a steak dinner.

What time of day is the event?

Timing as always critical, especially when it comes to food.

While we realize you wouldn’t likely serve bacon and eggs during a formal dinner (unless that was the angle you were going for), this is more around thinking about what will be occurring before and after the meal.

If you’re planning on taking your group on a high-thrill, high-energy zip line tour, then you probably don’t want to serve them a heavy lunch (best to stick to lighter fare, such as sandwiches or a taco bar).

If you know your group will be famished from having gone on a group hike or rock climbing adventure that afternoon, then you want to feed them a catered meal that will leave them satisfied and refueled (like a grilled steak dinner with a smashed potato bar).
