From Scrambling Up Indian Staircase Solo to Joining a Guided Climb, There Are Plenty of Rock Climbing Options in the Red River Gorge.

Unguided Climbs - Know what you're doing and have your own climbing gear? Then check out the following Red River Gorge climbing locations in the Frenchburg/Campton, KY area:

  • Indian Staircase - A 200ft advanced scramble at the end of a difficult 1.75-mile hike (3.5 round trip) with amazing views. Plan on taking 4 - 6 hours to complete hike/climb.
  • Sport climbing crags: Motherload, Dark Side, Thanatopsis (5.14b), The Legend (5.13b)
  • Trad climbing crags: Fortress Wall, Pebble Beach, Tower Rock, Roadside Attraction (5.7), Bedtime for Bonzo (5.6) and Rock Wars (5.10a)
  • Graining Fork Nature Preserve (a.k.a. Roadside Crag) - Day Permit is required to climb

Guided Climbs - New to the sport of rock climbing or just want an expert to show you how to make the most of your time on the crags of Eastern Kentucky? Then Southeast Mountain Guides may be the right option for your day. Cost ranges from $55 to $205 depending on climb type group size, and duration. 

They also offer what's known as "Via Ferrata" climbing; a style of climbing in which the climber is secured to a cable system while traversing a cliff face with the aid of iron hand and foot rungs.

Since you'll be laying your head on a comfy pillow at Cliffview Resort at the end of the day, we recommend you stick with day-hikes in the Red River Gorge area. Even with limiting your geographic area, there are tons of amazing hikes in the area. From easy to hard, there's something for everyone!

What's More Relaxing Than Sitting Beside a Pond or Stream With a Line In The Water?

Want to relax for a few hours and catch your dinner? You've got plenty of great fishing holes available to you near Cliffview Resort. Here's a quick list of your angling options:

Cliffview Resort - Yep, that's right, we have our own stocked lake right on our property. We'll even provide the fishing poles. Just bring the bait. You can catch bass, bluegill, and catfish in our man-made lake.

Red River - Starting about 15 miles east of Cliffview Resort, the Red River is a treasure to anglers of all stripes. The middle section of the Red offers the best fishing and is filled with crafty smallmouth bass, spotted bass and sunfish. Check out the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife for more information

Mill Creek Lake in Natural Bridge State Park - A small, easy-going lake, Mill Creek Lake is filled with Bass, bluegill, black crappie, catfish, longear & green sunfish, and rainbow trout.

Note: Kentucky requires anglers to have a fishing license. Buy your KY fishing license online or at an approved vendor.

Underground Cave Kayaking at Thrillsville

Distance from Cliffview Resort: 18 Minutes

What Lies Beneath The Gorge Underground?

Head on over to Thrillsville Adventure Park in Red River Gorge, KY, and journey via kayak underground into the darkness of their Gorge Grotto.

A unique and fun adventure that you just can't get anywhere else. 

The admission cost includes everything you need, so just show up 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time.

The tour is an hour long and can get pretty chilly (temp drops to about 55 degrees in the cave) so bring a light jacket or sweater.

Trail and Horse Riding in Daniel Boone National Forest

With the miles and miles of trails that wind throughout the Daniel Boone National Forest area, there's no shortage of amazing trails to ride horses on.

Wind your way through wooded trails passed waterfalls and serene overlooks.

Whisper Valley Riding Trails offers you an easy and fun way to enjoy the Red River Gorge on horseback. They're also very affordable with pricing starting at $35 for a one-hour trail ride.

If you're bringing your own horse, the USDA Forest Services has a trove of information about the various horse-riding trails in the National Forest. The State of Kentucky requires a Negative Coggins Test (please note, we do not have boarding or stables for horses at the Cliffview Resort).
