Ideas for Church Retreats

A church retreat provides participants with a chance to get together for prayer, reflection, and connecting with one another. While getting together with people of the same faith may seem as though all retreats are the same, that’s the farthest thing from the truth.

Coming up with activities to meet the needs of everyone involved in the retreat can be difficult, but it all comes down to creating enough options.

To begin with, once a location is selected, leaders of the retreat should contact officials where they are staying. These people know the ins and outs of the area. They can suggest nearby sights and places of interest that can help spark ideas for church retreats.

Outdoor Activities

Getting together outdoors provides a chance to get back to and appreciate nature. Coming up with ideas for church retreats is easy when it comes to nature-based activities. Day hikes, nature walks, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, camping, climbing and canoeing are just a handful of activities that can be explored outdoors. The outdoors also provides the space needed for certain team building activities.

Indoor Activities

Depending on the time of year, indoor activities are sometimes best for group activities. Choosing a location that is close to points of interest is important so that there are enough things for your church group to do. Whether it’s visiting museums or historic sites, participating in hands-on activities like pottery making, cooking classes, or virtually anything else, these activities allow for participants to bond with one another while working side by side or together.

Themed Events

Some ideas for church retreats are based more on themed-events or as a part of an informational series. For instance, some church retreat leaders bring in individuals or groups to present faith-building speeches or to lead the retreat group through numerous faith-building activities. While location doesn’t necessarily matter when it comes to having a themed-retreat, it does help make the speeches and presentations more of an event for participants.
